Explore Ardbeg’s Whimsical Whisky Spectacular Coming To London To Celebrate Ardbeg Day 2024

The circus is in town to celebrate the renowned single malt whisky distillery’s latest limited-edition, Ardbeg Spectacular, in honour of this year’s Ardbeg Day celebrations around the world

Fandoms have long been an essential source of community, offering a ready-made faithful family of folks bonded by mutual admiration. Whether it’s through music, film, or food and drink, shared appreciation can transcend the boundaries that often restrict friendships forming such as age, geography or general self-consciousness, creating global networks of like-minded and obsessed oddballs that feel supported and understood. None know this better than whisky distillery Ardbeg, who, tucked away on the rugged Scottish island of Islay – famed for its smoky, peaty flavours – has been meticulously crafting its world-renowned single malts with its global community of dram drinkers at its heart.

Established in 1815, Ardbeg is best known for its unique balance of smokiness and sweetness, and is one of the world’s most highly awarded smoky single malt whiskies – winning more than 50 gold and double gold medals in key whisky competitions since 2008, as well as being awarded ‘The Distillery of the Year Award’ at the International Whisky Competition 2022.

Despite its storied reputation, it hasn’t always been plain sailing for Ardbeg – the distillery faced an uncertain future in the 1980s and 90s, but was saved from extinction in 1997 when it joined The Glenmorangie Company. Ardbeg also has its community to thank for its longevity, forming the Ardbeg Committee in 2000 – a faithful fandom of over 180,000 members from over 130 countries enthusiastic about keeping Ardbeg’s doors open for many years to come.

In celebration of its committed community, the whisky company has been hosting Ardbeg Day, held annually on the final Saturday of The Islay Festival (Fèis Ìle), to unite its devoted followers worldwide. The event has fast become one of the buzziest events in the whisky calendar and transports the spirit of Islay’s traditional celebrations – which see more than 20,000 people embark to the island for its combination of music and malt, showcasing its distilleries, community, and culture – travel across the globe.

This year, on Saturday 1st June, the Ardbeg circus is rolling into town in honour of the distillery’s latest limited-edition blend – Ardbeg Spectacular. Ardbeg is notorious for thinking outside-of-the-box when it comes to its limited releases, designed for its ever-curious community, including BizarreBQ, Arrrrrrrdbeg, Ardcore and Wee Beastie. This year’s distinctive new flavour is defined by its eccentric ageing process – in a first for Ardbeg, the whisky has been scrupulously matured in highly sought-after port wine casks before returning to classic bourbon barrels, imbuing the drink with a helter-skelter of rich flavours.

“Ardbeg Spectacular is a high-flying spirit, very befitting of Ardbeg Day,” says Gillian Macdonald, Ardbeg’s Master Blender. “Its years in bourbon and port casks create a spectacle of flavours, the likes of which Ardbeggians will never have tasted before. We invite fans to roll up and feast their palates on its peculiar notes of mint chocolate, incense, lavender and smoked nuts, set off by a daring double act of salted caramel and tar. Like the finest performances in the circus ring, this is a whisky not to be missed.”

Inspired by the limited-edition whisky’s deep and peculiar extravaganza of flavours, this year’s festivities will take a show-stopping turn as Ardbeg’s immersive “Dark Circus” rolls into town at the Islay distillery and also on London’s Brick Lane, where it will transform Cafe 1001 into an enchanting escape for those looking to spice up their whisky cocktail nights. Whether you’re new and curious or already a dram devotee, attendees can delve into an offbeat and mysterious Ardbeggian take on the circus through intriguing tastings, entrancing theatrical performances, lively circus-themed games, costume competitions and all-day DJ sets.

This year’s Ardbeg Day celebrations promise a spectacle of flavours and fun, providing the perfect setting for an exploration of the distillery’s wealth of whiskies while keeping its community at the forefront of the celebrations, creating a welcoming space to share in the adventure with fellow whisky lovers.

London celebrations for Ardbeg Day 2024 will take place on Saturday 1st June 2024 at Cafe 1001, 91 Brick Lane London E1 6QL from 2pm.
