This summer, the V&A is your new creative playground. ‘Experiments with Image’ is a brand-new series of free events that’s all about pushing the limits of visual storytelling – and having a blast while doing it. Over the coming months, the museum is opening its doors to the next generation of artists and transforming into a relaxing hideout where you can bring your boldest ideas to life – so whether you’re into collage, self-portraits, mixed media, or just looking for your next artist date, this is your chance to get hands-on, express yourself, and see art (and yourself) in a whole new way.
Drop-in workshops take place on Saturday 28th June and Saturday 23rd August, led by Alexander Ikhide, a multidisciplinary artist known for blending photography, painting, and African visual traditions. Held at the V&A’s Art Studio in South Kensington, these sessions invite visitors aged 14 to 26 to explore themes of identity, spirituality, and representation using materials such as collage, paint, pastels, and inks.
By using self-portrait photography and expressive mark-making, you can channel 20th-century and contemporary artists to explore how colour and composition can be powerful tools in shaping narratives of the self. Whether you’re an experienced creator or just beginning your artistic journey, Ikhide’s workshops offer a welcoming space for experimentation, self-discovery, and creative play.

In a world where many of us are increasingly navigating anxiety, burnout, and overstimulation, art has never been more valuable as a vital tool for mindfulness. Engaging in creative activities has been shown to reduce stress, boost mood, and build emotional resilience. These workshops, centred on identity and self-expression, offer a space to slow down, reflect, and reconnect. Through simple yet impactful acts of cutting, painting, layering, and constructing, you can begin to process complex emotions, explore personal narratives, and make sense of your place in the world.
For Ikhide, art is not only a physical practice, but a mental and spiritual discipline. It’s a space where tradition meets experimentation, and where personal and cultural histories come to life on the page.
Curated by Adobe Creative Resident Michael Akuagwu, the ‘Experiments with Image’ series continues with monthly workshops exploring photomontage, assemblage, watercolour, and more. Each session tackles big themes – identity, memory, heritage, and belonging – whilst simultaneously providing a creative outlet for rest, reflection, and connection.
So, if you’re looking for a way to unplug, reconnect, and explore your creativity this summer, don’t miss the chance to experiment with image – and with yourself – at the V&A. Come solo or bring a friend, and leave with your own unique artwork and a renewed sense of calm and clarity.
No booking needed, just drop in. All materials will be provided. For more information, visit vam.ac.uk/whatson.
